The Risks of Working from Home

Working from home is definitely not suited to everybody - and the risks of working from home should be seriously considered before you quit your job in favour of a home-based workplace. Having spoken to a number of freelancers and people who have chosen to work from home, we've compiled a list of the common risks that these people face in the working from home world.

Common Risks of Working From Home

1. Finding the right job

One of the hardest things to do when deciding to work from home is finding a job which actually pays well, and provides a consistent stream of revenue. It is all very well to quit your real-world job, but if you don't have anything to back this up - and if you struggle to find work, you may find yourself in a worse position than you were previously.

2. Not getting enough work

Another issue is not getting enough work. Working from home is reliant on the fact that you will get a consistent and constant stream of work - much the same as you would have if you were working in an office or professional setting. If you suddenly run out of work, your income stream can dry out - and this could leave you short of cash.

A few of the other common risks of working from home include:

  • Not being able to self-motivate
  • Too many distractions around the house (i.e. TV, children, noisy neighbours, etc)
  • An unaccommodating office setting
  • Technological interruptions - i.e. power cuts, internet outages, etc.

As you can see, all of these risks need to be balanced with the benefits of working from home, before you decide to quit your real-world job.

How to Weigh the Benefits & Risks of Working from Home

Ensuring that you strike a successful balance between the risks and rewards of working from home is a difficult task. The best way to do this is to sit down and make a list, in two columns, of all of the benefits and all of the risks that you can think of.

When you have completed this, analyse each point based on its merits - and decide whether or not the risks outweigh the rewards, or vice versa. If the rewards are better - working from home may be the perfect solution for you.
